Think. Create. But most importantly, stay alive.

I don’t want to be heard
I want to be listened to
Does it bother anyone else
That someone else has your name?

I scream, you scream
We all scream ’cause we’re terrified
Of what’s around the corner
We stay in place
‘Cause we don’t want to lose our lives
So let’s think of something better.

Down in the forest, we’ll sing a chorus
One that everybody knows
Hands held higher, we’ll be on fire
Singing songs that nobody wrote.

My brain has given up
White flags are hoisted
I took some food for thought
It might be poisoned
The stomach in my brain
Throws up on to the page
Does it bother anyone else
That someone else has your name?

Quickly moving towards a storm
Moving forward, torn
In to pieces over reasons
Of what these storms are for
I don’t understand why everything I adore
Takes a different form when I squint my eyes
Have you ever done that
When you squint your eyes
And your eyelashes make it look a little not right
And then when just enough light
Comes from just the right side
And you find you’re not who you’re suppose to be?
This is not what you’re suppose to see
Please, remember me?
I am suppose to be King of a kingdom or swinging on a swing
Something happened to my imagination
This situation’s becoming dire
My treehouse is on fire
And for some reason I smell gas on my hands
This is not what I had planned.
This is not what I had planned.

  1. This is my favorite song. In some of the song I don’t quite understand what Tyler is trying to express with his lyrics but that’s okay because not everything can be explained or understood. What I took from the song is that we have other people that we are connected through music and we can forget about all of the issues and troubles in our lives.

  2. I have a feeling that this song has something to do with isolation or intense self-interest. To me, when he sings, “I scream, you scream, we all scream ’cause we’re terrified of what’s around the corner” I feel he is singing about our future in life and how we fear moving forward in real life because of potential outcomes, hence the words, “We stay in place ’cause we don’t want to lose our lives, so lets think of something better.” That ‘something better’ happens to be the ‘forest’. I believe the Forest represents our isolation within our minds and what we are comfortable with. The Forest also represents our familiarity, and we all want to stay in the Forest because there we are comfortable and we are king, and we can indulge in any pleasures we want and do whatever we wish. However, toward the end of the song, we learn that even though Tyler tries to remain in his Forest, he begins to claim that this isn’t what life is supposed to be, that he isn’t supposed to remain in the same place, that he isn’t supposed to hide from life. Either way, life happens anyway, and Tyler, instead of leaving his Forest, destroys it himself. The lyrics says “Please, remember me, I am supposed to be king of a kingdom or swinging on a swing…” and I think this shows that the Forest was indeed his escape from real life.

  3. To me forest is one of their best songs cause it does remind me of my life. It does seem to be a song of unsurity of the future or what might happen. When it says the chorus that repeated a lot in the song.. It reminds me of church and how every one does sing songs. When it says hands held higher we’ll be on fire it reminds me when during worship service people do that. And on “fire” for God is a saying as well. At the end it strikes me amazed, he did soemthing that he didn’t plan onto and it has a consequence or other words his tree house got set on fire, and is not what he planned, but God has a plan. I love this song and I feel no one could ever get the truly of what Tyler was thinking, but he writes music for us to help us and relate to it.
